Capacitor Production Department
Elkon Ltd. Company is a manufacturer of high quality, high reliability, aluminium electrolytic AC Motorstart Capacitors.
We share %70 of the marked in Turkey, and have customers all over the world.
General Information About AC Motorstart Capacitors
- Construction
Capacitors are manufactured, by using etched and formed pure aluminium foils (%99,99), seperated from each other with a low dencity, dielectric paper, inpregneted with a special electrolyte. Capacitor elements are fixed to the bakelite case, by filling the space between them, with a bituminous compound (softening point 110C min.).
Poles brought out to single or double, fast-on terminals. On requested supplied with end cap, bipolar cable, discharge resistance and metal mounting bracked.
- Application
In a fractional horse power single phase motor, in order to create a high starting torque, it will be necessary to displace the phase of the auxiliary winding by 90 degrees from the main winding, to get a rotating field. This will be achieved by connecting a motorstart capacitor in series with the starting winding. This capacitor and the starting winding will be disconnected automatically, as soon as the motor reaches about %75 of its synchronious speed.
Recommended Capacitors for Use in Single Phase Motors
With a suitable choosen motorstart capacitor, a loaded single phase motor will reach its full speed in approx. 3 seconds.
A table for start capacitors suitable for different HP ratings of 220 Volt AC 50/60 Hz single phase motors is given below.

Capacitance and Power Factor Measurement
The voltmeter shall be read within 2 seconds, the ammeter within 3 seconds, and the wattmeter within 4 seconds after the application of the test voltage. Do not apply voltage to the capacitor for more than 4 seconds.

Capacitors shall be capable of releasing any excessive internal pressure without violent expulsion of capacitor element or cover or emission of flame, when rated AC rims voltage 50/60 Hz is applied 30 minutes to a capacitor.
Accelerated Life Test
Capacitors shall be capable of withstanding life test at the given max. temperature ± 3°C ambient at rated sinusoidal voltage and frequency with current limiting and discharge resistors.
The duty cycles and duration of test for capacitors are listed below.
At the conclusion of the life test, at room temperature, the capacitance shall not differ from the initial measured value by more than ± 10 % and the power factor shall not exceed 20%.
